One of the main road routes into Chichester is becoming a major concern with its local and surrounding population due to the Stockbridge road rail line crossing.
With increased road traffic of the past few years the road has been getting busier and busier but the road crosses the rail line at Stockbridge road which now has an above average amount of rail traffic itself causing the crossing to be operation 35 minutes in every hour and during the rush hour periods of morning and late afternoon complete gridlock is present on the road.
In a bid to ease the congestion on the road a new bridge crossing the railway line was proposed. The outcome of the investigation has left many reeling after an estimated £10m was announced to get the schemed completed.
The price tag has left the District Council with no option but to suggest the scheme is unrealistic for them to fund however demand by aggravated local residents and affected retail stores is high and expectations are for a resolution to be found to the this major issue.
Suggestions for underpasses to be constructed beneath the railway line have also been dismissed after it was found the cost for this would be even more than the bridge option.
The campaign continues with no concrete resolution in sight but the worrying aspect for many is how this is becoming an ever growing problem in other locations around the country.
