Independent development experts Halcrow have concluded in a recently commissioned survey that a rail line between Portishead and Bristol would be viable.

The survey investigated the requirement, viability and cost of the project which presented that an estimated infrastructure budget of up to £15m would be required to complete the project.

The independent survey was bought about by immense demand presented to North Somerset Council from frustrated commuters and residents despairing at what seemed like a never ending increase to congestion on Portisheads surrounding roads, one MP even described the area as being the biggest cul-de-sac in Britain.

The suggested railway line would run a series of no show stoppers along a stretch of redeveloped, disused rail line from the town centre to Portbury Dock.

As with all projects the focus now lies in the establishment of funding and subsidies hopefully through the Transport Innovation Fund or indeed any other alternative funding opportunities.

The establishment of a Portishead to Bristol rail link would compliment the major housing programme that is currently underway in the area, if for whatever reason the scheme does not go ahead then it will leave the town as one of the largest in the country without a rail link and also one of the most congested towns in the country.
