Are Our Fares Fair?

The Campaign for Better Transport has produced a report on rail fares that has some people questioning the reasoning behind current rail fare strategies.

The report, produced exactly a year after the Governments Rail White highlights that some commuters in England, Scotland and Wales are paying a levy of up to 5 times more for walk on fares than if they had bought tickets in advance.

The disproportion is substantial and will be a topic of debate as to why, in an age where we need to be encouraging commuters to take advantage of the 'greener' more efficient option of rail transport we appear to pricing the option out.

There is a genuine demand now for cheaper more efficient rail transport across the UK and many are now demanding the Government take more positive action in providing adequate funding to support growth and more importantly affordable and economical methods of transport.

Commuters want to be able to take advantage of ad-hoc as well as regular scheduled rail transport but to effectively penalise ad-hoc rail travellers will ultimately deter or alienate travellers.

The Campaign for Better Transport report summarised that on average city to city walk on rail fares were currently 4.69 times more expensive than advance booking the same.
